2024 FALL SYMPOSIUM

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The Association for Preservation Technology – Washington, DC Chapter (APT DC) is excited to announce our 2024 Fall Symposium theme: Monuments and Memorials.

The symposium will be held on September 20th, 2024 in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Venue details will be announced shortly.

Throughout the chapter’s region, which encompasses Washington, DC; Virginia; Maryland; West Virginia; and parts of Delaware, hundreds of monuments and memorials have been erected to commemorate iconic and influential people and events that have shaped the cultural identity of the region and country. Further, our buildings become monuments themselves when they become engrained in our cultural heritage. This symposium will focus on the preservation and stewardship of these monuments and memorials and demonstrate how preservation is able to contribute to the protection, promotion, and reflection on these testaments to collective history and identity.

APT DC is seeking submission of abstracts related to the following three topics:

  • Case studies of preservation or renewal efforts for culturally significant monuments or memorials.
  • Application of new or novel technologies and techniques in the preservation of cultural heritage assets.
  • Monumental Buildings: the preservation of culturally significant buildings that balance historical and cultural identity with contemporary use.

Proposals for presentations ranging from 30 to 60 minutes will be accepted.

Highest consideration will be given to abstracts that:

  • Present compelling ideas, insights, principles, and lessons applicable to other projects
  • Present novel analyses or ideas
  • Offer stimulating thought or encourage dialogue and debate
  • Contain original research
  • Make a significant contribution to the body of knowledge in monument and memorial preservation.

Deadline for Submissions: June 14th, 2024

Please submit your abstracts via email to info@aptdc.org
