We welcome the return of our ongoing series, Preservation Pioneers, where we speak with a member of our local historic preservation community to discuss their training, career, and their predictions for the future of our field. This time, we're speaking with Al Cox.

A native of Dallas, Texas, architect Al Cox is best known locally for his 27-year career as Alexandria's City Architect and, later Historic Preservation Manager. He was instrumental in formalizing the City's Design Guidelines in 1993 and has spent the subsequent decades behind-the-scenes guiding architects, homeowners, and developers to rehabilitation and new-build projects that are compatible with the scale and feel of the historic City. With the spirit of an educator, he has brought homebuyers, Government officials, and developers with little to no experience of historic buildings to an understanding and concern for the fabric that makes up the City. Al retired in 2020, but continues to serve the city in a volunteer capacity. Al and his wife, Kathy, live in the Parker-Grey neighborhood of Alexandria in a house they have spent the last 30+ years renovating.

This session will also be livestreamed on Facebook, but if you want to ask Al questions, please join us in person!
