APT DC is a not-for-profit educational association founded in 1980 to serve the needs of preservationist in the greater Washington DC metro area. APT DC promotes the exchange of ideas and knowledge concerning the conservation of historic resources and the application of preservation technology. We publish 10 newsletters per year, highlighting upcoming events, reviewing recent tours and lectures, and promoting exchanges with other local groups with similar interests. APT DC is a local chapter of the Association for Preservation Technology International. APTI was founded in 1968 to disseminate information on historic building materials and systems and to promote development of preservation technology. APTI is recognized for its technical quarterly publication The Bulletin, and its newsletter, The Communique.

APTDC Young Professionals Sponsorship Program

The 2008 program, sponsored by the APTDC Founder's Fund, will be sending one
lucky young professional to the APTI conference [Montreal, October 13-17, 2008]
and the Preservation Trades Network conference (International Preservation Trades
Network - IPTW) [Barre, Vermont - July 18-20, 2008].

Historic Barn Conference in PA Barn Country

Date: June 5 - 7
Location: Kutztown University, Berks County, PA


Sponsored by the Historic Barn and Farm Foundation of Pennsylvania and co-hosted by the
National Barn Alliance Annual Meeting and Conference at Kutztown University, this three-day
event will feature historic barns and the people who tell their stories. Noted barn historian
Bob Ensminger (The Pennsylvania Barn) wil be a featured speaker.

Construction History Society

The Construction History Society of America announces its first meeting to be held on
November 6 - 8, 2008 at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. The theme of the meeting
will be "Learning from Design and Construction Failures."

FOUNDERS' FUND AWARD FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS
2007 SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM - AWARDS ANNOUNCEMENT

APTDC is pleased to announce this year's winners of the
Founders' Fund Award for Young Professionals Sponsorship Program
.

One applicant was chosen for the APTI Conference in San Juan, which includes full conference registration, travel stipend and a full-year APTDC membership. Two recipients were chosen for the
Preservation Trades Network (PTN) International Preservation Trades Workshop (IPTW) in
Frederick, MD, which includes full conference registration, travel stipend,
and a full-year APTDC membership. Further, three Chapter Membership Awards were handed
out, which includes a one-year complimentary membership to APTDC.

APTI CONFERENCE AWARD

Seth Wilschutz, Intern Architect, Hartman - Cox Architects, Washington, D.C.

Mr. Wilschutz earned his B.S. Architecture at the University of Cincinnati in 2003 and his Masters of Architecture at the University of Cincinnati in 2005. He completed three cooperative learning quarters with Hartman - Cox before returning to join them full time upon his graduation. While at UC Seth earned the Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award, the Outstanding Graduate Student Award and the Outstanding M. Arch Student Award. During Seth’s time at Hartman – Cox he assisted with the Restoration and Enhancement of the National Historic Landmark Old Patent Office Building (Robert Mills, Thomas U. Walter, Adolph Cluss; 1836-68), now home to the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Seth was instrumental in the development of the construction documents, and developed creative and sensitive solutions for accessibility and integration of modern building systems in the 19th century Greek Revival building.

PTN IPTW AWARDS

Jennifer Parker, Intern Architect, National Park Service, Technical Preservation Services, Washington, D.C. (through the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers)

Ms. Parker earned her B.S. Building Construction at Auburn University in 2002 and her Master of Fine Arts in Historic Preservation at Savannah College of Arts & Design in 2007. While in Savannah Ms. Parker was President of the Southeast Region Chapter of APTI and helped plan the Atlanta conference. Since joining the Technical Preservation Services office of the NPS as a contractor through the NCSHPO office Jennifer has been instrumental in the development of the First Time Users Guide to the Federal Rehabilitation Tax Incentive Credit Program (FTIP). She also reviews rehabilitation projects seeking federal tax credits and provides technical assistance relating to The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Jennifer is currently working on the development of case studies which highlight projects that have successfully completed the FTIP and also earned a LEED rating or similar recognition for sustainability.

Kent Hulet, Structural Engineer, Robert Silman Associates, Washington, D.C.

Mr. Hulet earned his B.S. Civil Engineering at Brigham Young University in 2003 and his M.S. Architectural Engineering at Pennsylvania State University in 2006. He also earned his LEED AP certification in 2006. Mr. Hulet was Visiting Scholar at the University of Sheffield, England in 2004.
Since joining Robert Silman Associates in 2005 Kent has participated in the rehabilitation of several
noted historic structures including the Eastern Market (both before and after the fire) in Washington, D.C., Healy Hall at Georgetown University. He is currently involved with the stabilization of Fort Pike (1826), New Orleans, LA. Fort Pike took a direct hit by Hurricane Katrina and was completely submerged and now exhibits extensive shifting, foundation settlement and weaknesses in lateral thrust resistance. Kent’s
study of historic masonry structures that have been subjected to flooding will aid in the development of solutions to stabilize the structure for public access.

Announce "Endangered Maryland:


Statewide List of Threatened Historic Projects

"Endangered Maryland," the first statewide list of threatened historic properties in Maryland, is released today in the March-April edition of Maryland Life. A statewide panel created the list by evaluating nominated properties, and assessing the level of threat, historic and architectural significance, community commitment, and potential solutions.  The program's purpose is to generate public awareness of Maryland's significant threatened properties, possible solutions and call for action.

As a local chapter of the Association for Preservation Technology-International (APTI) we encourage all
interested to also join APTI. While APT DC organize tours, lectures and other activities in and around
the metro DC area, APTI is the international organization that connects us to the international
preservaton technology community. APTI holds their annual conference in various cities in and outside of
the continental US. APTI also publishes The Bulletin Journal and the Communique newsletter, both of
which are highly regarded preservation publication.

New chapters receive grants from APTI to offset the cost of non-profit incorporation and return $20.00
